Paraffin Wax vs Soy Wax: Which Is Better for Candle Making?

If you are starting to make candles, the first choice is the wax. The two most common choices are paraffin wax and soy wax. Neither is "best" for everything, so it helps to understand how they differ.

What they are

Paraffin wax is a refined wax made from petroleum. Soy wax is made from soybean oil. Both are sold in blocks, flakes or pellets for candle making.

How they compare

• Feel and hardness: paraffin is usually firmer; soy wax is usually softer and creamier.
• Colour and scent: both can be coloured and scented. Results depend on the dye, the fragrance and the amount you add, so test small batches.
• Melting behaviour: soy wax generally melts at a lower temperature than paraffin. Always follow the instructions on the wax you buy.
• Origin: soy wax comes from a plant source; paraffin comes from petroleum.

Burn time depends on more than wax

How long a candle lasts and how cleanly it burns depends on the wick size, the width of the candle or container, the amount of fragrance and the room it burns in, not only the wax type. Be careful with claims that one wax always burns longer or cleaner.
